Controversy Over Meghan Markle’s Family Photos at Althorp

Meghan Markle has sparked debate by sharing photos of her children, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie, at Princess Diana’s childhood home. Critics describe Markle’s move as ‘tasteless.’ The pictures were shared in an Instagram post about their recent visit to the UK, with a caption reading ‘Summer Holiday.’ One photo features Prince Harry and his children walking along a path surrounded by greenery, believed to be Althorp, the ancestral estate of the Spencer family.

The photo includes Archie and Harry holding bouquets, suggesting a visit to Diana’s resting place on an island at the estate. A royal expert suggests Prince William is likely ‘livid’ about Markle’s public sharing of images from the Spencer estate.

Hilary Fordwich, a British royals expert, noted that Prince William may view the Instagram post as a commercialization of Althorp, fueling his opposition to Markle’s actions. Fordwich predicts that officials and guardians of the monarchy will work to limit Meghan and Harry’s re-engagement with royal duties.

Another royal expert, Richard Fitzwilliams, highlighted that the Spencers likely gave Harry and Meghan permission to visit Althorp. Therefore, the post is technically acceptable. He also pointed out the significant silence maintained by Harry and Meghan after meeting King Charles and Queen Camilla, contrasting with previous instances of media leaks.

British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard viewed Markle’s decision to share the family photos as ‘predictable.’ Chard suggested that the move reinforces their connection to history while showing the tension between utilizing the royal story and maintaining a distance from the royal title.

King Charles’ recent reunion with his grandchildren, whom he hadn’t seen since 2022, is reportedly part of a controlled reconciliation with Harry. However, Fordwich believes Prince William’s stance will prevent any significant reinstatement of Harry and Meghan into royal duties. The extended family remains cautious about potential media leaks.

Chard expressed skepticism about Harry’s return to the royal circle without a sincere apology to King Charles and the country. She stated, ‘A family reunion is one thing. A return to royal life is another.’
