Controversy Over Sanctuary Policies and ICE in New Jersey
Sanctuary policies in New Jersey are under scrutiny after a recent incident involving an illegal immigrant fleeing from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) resulted in a crash. The crash, which took place on a major New Jersey highway, injured the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen.
Republican Response
Republican critics argue that these sanctuary policies make it difficult for ICE to execute its duties effectively. Assemblyman Paul Kanitra, representing Point Pleasant Beach, suggested that the incident wouldn’t have occurred without New Jersey’s sanctuary status. The state adopted these policies after Governor Mikie Sherrill came into office. Kanitra claims that Democrats are failing to take responsibility for the chaos caused by these policies.
“You kind of reap what you sow,” Kanitra stated, reflecting on incidents in his district involving illegal immigrants behind the wheel.
In an example provided by Kanitra, an illegal immigrant drove into a family, killing an infant outside a kosher supermarket.
Details of the Incident
The crash occurred when an illegal immigrant, targeted by an ICE operation, fled at high speed after a stoplight violation. The fleeing vehicle ultimately collided with another vehicle in North Brunswick.
ICE officers attempted to remove the individual safely from their vehicle but were compelled to pursue following repeated warnings. The suspect drove onto U.S. 130, colliding with a Tesla and injuring Mayor Cohen’s wife.
Ongoing Debate
Senator Mike Testa of Vineland emphasized the necessity of agreements between local authorities and ICE, such as the 287(g) interagency cooperation agreements, for public safety. He cited an increase in illegal behavior among illegal immigrants and criticized Democrats’ lack of response to enforce laws.
Conversely, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman called for the abolition of ICE on social media, suggesting that federal enforcement should be targeted rather than the drivers.
The incident reignites the debate on law enforcement’s role in immigration policies. Senator Brian Stack conveyed the importance of enforcing existing laws, while Testa highlighted the concept of citizenship privileges in maintaining law and order.
In summarizing his stance, Testa expressed the belief that areas like his county still value traditional law and order paradigms, contrasting with federal resistances flagged by some state Democrats. The dialogue continues on whether sanctuary policies serve or hinder public safety and immigration enforcement.
