New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under renewed scrutiny after a 2023 statement on the 9/11 attacks resurfaced online. In the post, he highlighted the ongoing deaths and suffering resulting from the wars following the attacks.
Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers died on 9/11; 22 years later, the death hasn’t stopped. We mourn our neighbors who died that day. The hundreds of thousands who died in the wars that followed. The unknown millions injured and displaced. In their memory, we work toward a better world,
Mamdani wrote on X in 2023.
Certain 9/11 families have requested that the socialist mayor refrain from attending New York City’s 9/11 commemoration. This follows backlash from Mamdani’s interview with Hasan Piker, who in 2019 made a controversial comment regarding 9/11. Mamdani initially failed to condemn the remarks but later described them as objectionable and reprehensible.
Critics have accused Mamdani of using the solemn anniversary to emphasize the subsequent wars without acknowledging who executed the attacks. His description of the deaths has been noted for using passive language.
Political Figures React
Some figures, such as Marc Thiessen, have expressed strong opposition to Mamdani’s potential attendance at Ground Zero on 9/11. New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov and Florida Rep. Randy Fine have made similar statements, criticizing the mayor’s associations and remarks.
Retired officials from the Port Authority have also advised Mamdani and others to avoid the 9/11 memorial site.
Paul Mauro, a Fox News contributor and former NYPD officer, has openly advised Mamdani not to attend any future commemorations. Other public figures, including Rep. Nancy Mace and Joey Jones, have voiced disapproval, emphasizing the tragedy of the attacks.
Mamdani’s Plans
Despite the critiques, Mamdani intends to attend the 9/11 commemoration event to honor the victims and their families, first responders, and alongside Vice President JD Vance and former presidents, including Biden and Bush.
An organized petition by victims’ families questions the appropriateness of Mamdani’s attendance and its alignment with the event’s intentions.
Fox News Digital sought comments from Mamdani’s office. Ashley J. DiMella covers political topics for Fox News Digital.
