Controversy Surrounds Casting of Helen in New Odyssey Film

Helen of Troy is once again at the center of a conflict. This time, it is not the legendary queen’s beauty or elopement with Paris that stirs controversy, but her portrayal in cinema. Christopher Nolan’s $250 million adaptation of Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ has sparked debate by casting Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o as Helen.

With its release looming, Nolan’s decision has ignited fierce backlash. Critics claim the choice is a deliberate attempt to undermine classical narratives. One user on the social media platform X argued it is a ‘woke’ tactic aimed at ‘destroying Western civilization.’

Elon Musk, who owns the platform X, described Nolan’s casting decision as a disrespectful act towards Homer, labeling the director as an ‘anti-White racist.’ Musk speculated Nolan’s decision was motivated by a desire to win awards.

Donald Trump Jr. voiced similar disdain, calling for Hollywood to cease promoting such choices. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh dismissed the idea that Nyong’o could be seen as ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.’

In contrast, supporters of Nolan point out the absurdity of demanding ‘authenticity’ for mythical characters. Helen’s origin—born from a swan’s egg—already defies realism, they argue. Classicists argue that casting choices reflect an openness valid in ancient Greece, where concepts of race differed from today.

This strategic decision might mirror casting choices in past portrayals. Diane Kruger, known for her Aryan features, played Helen in 2004’s ‘Troy,’ a version favored by Donald Trump Jr.
