Controversy Surrounds Memorial for Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University
Event and Protest Plans
Utah Valley University (UVU) will host an event commemorating the one-year anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. The event, organized by Turning Point USA, is called “Freedom Built to Last Memorial.” It will take place at the UCCU Center on September 10.
The memorial has met with dissent. A planned protest, organized by the university’s chapter of Students for a Democratic Society and other groups, is set to occur outside the venue. These groups express opposition to the event, stating concerns about its impact on campus.
Opposition and Criticism
In an Instagram post, the student group accuses UVU of endorsing the views of Turning Point USA by shutting down campus operations for the event. Students are invited to join the protest in solidarity against TPUSA, the university administration, and Utah County Commissioners.
UVU, however, says the closure aims to provide space for reflection and healing, not as an endorsement of the event. Both the university and Turning Point USA have been contacted for comments.
Background on Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA
Charlie Kirk was a notable conservative activist, podcaster, and supporter of former President Donald Trump. Turning Point USA, which he co-founded at 18, promotes conservative politics on campuses. Kirk was known for his outspoken views on topics like race, gun rights, immigration, and abortion.
Recently, a judge ruled that Tyler Robinson will stand trial for Kirk’s killing, facing potential death penalty if convicted. Robinson has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Call for Cancellation
The SDS chapter at UVU is also circulating an open letter demanding the cancellation of TPUSA’s event. The letter opposes the university granting campus access to the group, particularly on such a significant date.
The letter criticizes UVU President Jon Anderson for allegedly aligning with TPUSA, described as “openly racist and antagonistic.” It urges the university to protect marginalized students impacted by the ideologies Kirk represented.
The open letter has amassed hundreds of signatures, with 483 coming from UVU students.
TPUSA’s Perspective
Turning Point USA positions the event as a homage to Kirk’s legacy. It describes him as a devoted husband, father, and advocate for free speech. The event is both a memorial and a call to continue his efforts.
Speakers include conservative radio host Glenn Beck and Christian author Frank Turek. The event will be streamed live on platforms such as YouTube, X, Facebook, and Rumble.
Security Measures for Attendees
The UCCU Center outlines extensive security protocols for the event. Attendees need tickets and will go through security checks. Metal detectors will be used, with personal items subjected to inspection.
Only small clutch bags are allowed, and medically necessary bags require inspection. Prohibited items include balloons, banners, drones, noisemakers, cameras, and any face coverings that obscure more than the mouth and nose.
