In Livingston Parish, deputies arrested a man using voice-changing technology to impersonate a teenage girl while communicating with a child online. Sheriff Jason Ard stated the suspect was manipulating a 14-year-old girl, highlighting the threat posed by such digital devices. The incident occurred on Roblox, a popular gaming app among children. As a registered sex offender, the suspect was prohibited from using the platform.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill emphasized the significance of this issue at CrimeCon in Las Vegas. She noted that child exploitation, including producing illegal content and sexual abuse, is a serious crime with real victims. During the conference, it was revealed that many children, lured from their homes, have been rescued after significant distances.
This year, Louisiana is projected to receive 90,000 tips about online child exploitation. By May, 30,000 had been processed, resulting in numerous arrests. Many parents remain unaware of these dangers, as Sheriff Ard explained. The devices children use are now akin to threats like the ‘white van’ once was.
“Now we have this internet-based platform,” Ard continued. “That device that we now have in our hands that we give in our children is the white van, right? That is the white van. It is now at your dinner table. It’s now in your bedroom.”
The crackdown focuses on known sex offenders illegally accessing social media and gaming apps, places teeming with potential victims. Roblox has been criticized, with some alleging that it facilitates predation. However, Roblox disputes these claims, asserting that they misrepresent the platform and ignore ongoing safety improvements.
Roblox CEO David Baszucki announced the addition of over 100 safety features to protect users, 40% of whom are under 13. A spokesperson stated that sharing images or videos is prohibited, and safeguards include AI detection and human moderators. The platform also collaborates with law enforcement and child protection agencies like the NCMEC.
Recently, Roblox implemented age checks to limit chat access, ensuring younger users engage only with peers. Chat for users under nine is disabled by default.
The issue raises critical discussions on digital safety, urging platforms and authorities to reinforce protections against online child exploitation.
