Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints Clash in Joint Practice
It’s summer NFL training camp time, where tensions run high as players strive to earn their spots amidst the oppressive heat. Joint practices between teams often lead to heightened aggression, as seen with the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints.
On Tuesday, the teams faced off in Oxnard, California, and the session quickly turned tumultuous. Cowboys’ outside linebacker Sam Williams and Saints’ tight end Moliki Matavao were involved in a confrontation during the practice.
The scuffle soon escalated into multiple skirmishes and culminated in a brawl, with players exchanging punches. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer remarked, “Right now, I’m in charge of fight club.” Players used fists against helmets, which proved ineffective, leading some to hurl helmets instead.
Saints’ receiver Ronnie Bell engaged in a fight, while tight end Brock Rechsteiner used a wrestling move on Cowboys’ safety Jalen Thompson. Eventually, Cowboys’ linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku and cornerback Caelen Carson were also involved in the melee, with Ezeiruaku getting ejected for a thrown punch.
Saints center Erik McCoy tossed a Cowboys player’s helmet, only to see it land a few yards away. Subsequently, Ezeiruaku grabbed McCoy’s helmet and sent it flying before throwing his jab.
The intensity prompted comments from Saints linebacker Pete Werner, emphasizing the need for protection yet cautioning against reckless behavior. “You want your guys protecting each other,” he said. “Let’s be smart here. Let’s get this moving.”
Both teams’ coaches expressed displeasure, focusing on honing skills rather than fighting. Joint practices are designed to replace preseason games, ensuring controlled environments where veteran players challenge starters from the opposing team.
“Nobody wants this,” Schottenheimer stated. He labeled the events “unfortunate” and “disappointing,” noting his team’s lack of progress. On Wednesday, there will be no continuation between these teams, as the Saints will move on to face the Rams in another joint practice.
