Dan Koh, a former aide in the Biden administration, recently won a primary race in Massachusetts. This victory positions him for a strong run for the House of Representatives in the upcoming November election. Koh topped six candidates aiming to replace Rep. Seth Moulton, who concluded his House service with a failed Senate bid against Sen. Ed Markey.
Koh previously worked at the White House as chief of staff to then-Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and later as deputy assistant to the president. His campaign received support from both former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, reflecting his ties within the administration.
Koh’s successful primary is not his first run for Congress. In 2018, he narrowly lost the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts’ 3rd Congressional District.
Koh campaigns on progressive policies, such as dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and advocating for universal healthcare. With these positions, he is set to replace Moulton in the 6th Congressional District, a reliably Democratic area.
Seth Moulton, who represented the district since 2015 and served in the Marine Corps, ran for the Senate but faced a tough primary against Markey. Markey, supported by figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, secured his position despite Moulton’s push for change.
Koh maintains strong ties to the establishment left. His father, Howard Koh, was an assistant secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services under President Obama, and his uncle also served in federal roles.
Koh’s November opponent will be Republican Micah Jones, a military veteran running unopposed in his primary.
