Darline Graham Steps Into South Carolina Political Scene

Senator Darline Graham entered the political arena in South Carolina, addressing hundreds of Republican voters. Her entry into politics follows the passing of her brother, Lindsey Graham, and a call from former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed her campaign.

Currently serving in an interim capacity, Graham aims to continue her brother’s term and is one of nine Republicans competing in the special primary election on August 11. Despite being relatively new to politics, she emphasizes her understanding of crucial federal policy issues like budgeting and health care costs. Backed by Trump, she seeks to champion both South Carolina and Trump’s agenda.

During a recent event in Lexington, Graham expressed her unexpected rise to the political stage. “I’ve never had any desire to be a politician,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to serving both the state and Trump’s priorities.

Her political journey began three weeks ago, after her brother’s sudden death from an aortic tear. Known mainly through her brother’s story of overcoming adversity, Graham now has about a week to persuade South Carolina Republicans that she is the right choice.

Her competitors include well-known figures like former Governor Mark Sanford, who warned against deficit spending. U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, endorsed by Senators Rick Scott and Mike Lee, promoted the SAVE America Act. Two-term U.S. Rep. Russell Fry shared his narrative of resilience and faith.

After delivering speeches, attendees participated in a straw poll, where Graham emerged victorious. However, many still sought more information to make an informed decision in the primary. Charles Brentnell, an attendee, expressed support for Graham, Norman, and Fry, emphasizing the need for legislative action without extended breaks.

As the crowd debated their choices, Gary Atkinson leaned toward Norman but appreciated various candidates’ viewpoints. Although he backed Lindsey Graham in the past, Atkinson noted disagreements on certain issues.

Should a runoff be necessary, it will occur on August 25. The Republican nominee will eventually face Democrat Annie Andrews in the general election. Other contenders at the event included attorney Duke Buckner, businessman Mark Lynch, former Mayor Mark McBride, retired officer Glenda Gail Parker, and entrepreneur Sam Shepherd.
