Darline Graham Takes Historic Step as South Carolina’s First Female Senator

Sen. Darline Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, has created a series of firsts in the Senate as well as for her home state. She was sworn in on Tuesday, becoming the first female senator from South Carolina and the first sibling appointed to the Senate. Her appointment fills the significant void left by her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham.

During the ceremony, Darline Graham expressed her commitment to continue her brother’s legacy. She stated, “Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him. My brother was an amazing person, an outstanding leader, and a genuinely good man.”

Who is Darline Graham?

Although she has no prior elected experience, Darline Graham was visible in her brother Lindsey Graham’s political career. She was often seen alongside him during campaign events and swearing-in ceremonies.

Darline Graham pledged to work diligently over the coming months, supporting President Trump and advancing her brother’s initiatives for the citizens of South Carolina and the United States.

Several years ago, when Lindsey Graham was a presidential candidate, he mentioned to C-SPAN that if his sister were involved in the administration, she would be an excellent representative for the country. He praised her ability to represent the nation effectively.

Darline Graham’s Appointment

Darline Graham’s rapid transition to the Senate followed the tragic death of her brother, Lindsey Graham. Her swearing-in ceremony in the old Senate chamber marked an initial phase in taking over her brother’s term.

The appointment was made by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, after President Trump suggested Darline for the role. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina supported her appointment by meeting her on numerous occasions before appearing alongside her in Columbia.

Governor McMaster noted Lindsey Graham’s past care for his sister and expressed his honor in asking Darline Graham to complete her brother’s work.

Darline Graham will serve the remainder of Lindsey Graham’s term until January. Afterward, a new figure will assume the position of junior senator for South Carolina.

Upcoming Senate Seat Election

The race to replace Lindsey Graham as the GOP nominee in South Carolina has already began. Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman are considering entering the contest scheduled for August 11.

President Trump has yet to endorse a candidate but has shown interest in Rep. Russell Fry, who he supported in the 2022 House elections against former Rep. Tom Rice.

Republicans must also find individuals to fill Lindsey Graham’s roles on various Senate committees following his death. Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated that the conference is still working through these arrangements, noting that Darline Graham will be sworn in and then decisions about committee positions will follow.
