Happy, an Asian elephant, has resided at the Bronx Zoo for more than 40 years. At 47, she has been living alone since 2006 following a conflict-induced separation from the zoo’s other elephants.
Opinions differ on whether Happy is content. The zoo maintains that Happy is comfortable, while an animal rights organization argues otherwise, claiming that Happy is unlawfully confined. The group is pursuing legal action to free Happy.
The Nonhuman Rights Project, a nonprofit advocating for nonhuman animal rights, seeks to extend human-like legal protections to Happy and others, including elephants and chimpanzees. They filed a petition for her release on Tuesday.
The organization asserts that Happy’s captivity infringes on her liberty and proposes relocating her to an elephant sanctuary for socialization opportunities. Previously, Happy shared enclosure space with other elephants, such as Patty and Maxine, but has been separated for over a decade.
Jim Breheny, director of the Bronx Zoo, has labeled these claims as “ludicrous”. He accuses the group of leveraging the zoo’s elephants to promote their intentions. The zoo has consistently stated that Happy is not isolated, highlighting her sensory interactions with other elephants.
Animal rights activists, however, have expressed concerns over Happy’s circumstances for years. Before 2002, she shared her space with an elephant named Grumpy until another pair of elephants, Maxine and Patty, injured Grumpy fatally. Afterward, she was paired with Sammy, who passed away in 2006.
Following Sammy’s death, the Bronx Zoo decided to stop bringing in new elephants, leaving Happy alone. The Nonhuman Rights Project, which also represents elephants in Connecticut and chimpanzees, has not yet succeeded with any legal cases.
