Debate Over Israeli Product Boycott Divides Park Slope Food Co-op
The Park Slope Food Co-op, a grocery store known for its social consciousness, finds itself at the center of a heated debate. Located in a liberal Brooklyn neighborhood, the co-op is grappling with internal conflict over whether to boycott Israeli products due to Middle Eastern tensions.
Inside the store, members busily shop among the fresh and frozen goods. Outside, differing opinions unfold at tables set up to either support or oppose the proposed boycott. This division marks a broader cultural reflection of Brooklyn’s liberal community’s concerns and consumption habits.
For several years, co-op members have been deeply divided over this issue. The matter has sparked heated discussions during meetings, highlighting the tension among members. A crucial vote on the boycott is scheduled for Tuesday evening’s general meeting.
In preparation for the vote, the co-op informed members of enhanced security measures. An email sent out over the weekend mentioned the hiring of additional security personnel and the introduction of an extra check-in point. These steps followed threats, suspicious mail substances, aggressive calls, and hostile posts on social media encountered by the co-op.
While most members continue to engage respectfully, the email indicated that some situations have exceeded typical disagreements. Instances of verbal conflicts and, in a few cases, physical altercations have occurred among co-op members.
A recent meeting descended into controversy when laughter broke out during discussions of antisemitism and conspiracy theories about Jewish influence in the U.S. This reaction alarmed some Jewish leaders and worried several of the co-op’s 17,000 members. As one of the country’s largest and oldest co-ops, these developments underscore significant challenges within the community.
