Just outside Plymouth Superior Court on Monday, defense attorney Kevin Reddington shared his apprehension with reporters before the jury in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial resumed deliberations for the third day. When asked about his feelings ahead of court, Reddington admitted to being ‘typical, nervous’ about the outcome.
Reddington strongly criticized media coverage of the case, particularly highlighting Sean Hannity and Nancy Grace. He accused them of misrepresenting facts and scrutinizing Clancy’s symptoms. ‘This weekend has been horrific with the coverage,’ Reddington said, emphasizing the harm such reporting causes. ‘If you’re going to be a journalist, do it right,’ he urged.
The jury, tasked with determining Clancy’s criminal responsibility for the January 24, 2023 killings of her three children, began deliberations following closing arguments presented on Thursday morning by both Reddington and the prosecutors representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The jury spent a full day deliberating on Friday, which resulted in a question regarding evidence but no verdict. Jurors had asked the judge to review pill bottles and a knife submitted as evidence.
Reddington briefly acknowledged Clancy’s state on Friday, describing her as ‘nervous, sad, scared.’ However, he refrained from commenting on her condition Monday. Clancy, 36, was in court wearing a dark green long-sleeve blouse, with her family seated directly behind her as they awaited the verdict.
Clancy stands accused of strangling her three young children—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months—over three years ago in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home while her then-husband was out running errands. Upon returning, he found Clancy outside underneath a second-story window following a suicide attempt, an act that resulted in her paralysis from the waist down.
Clancy’s legal defense argues that she was experiencing a state of psychosis, acting under the influence of auditory hallucinations linked to postpartum psychosis—a severe but uncommon mental illness affecting some new mothers, characterized by hallucinations. In contrast, the prosecution posits that Clancy was not psychotic and was fully conscious of her actions, accusing her of premeditated murder and pushing for a first-degree murder conviction that carries a potential life sentence.
The jury, consisting of nine women and three men, also considers alternative verdicts such as second-degree murder, manslaughter, or acquitting Clancy due to a lack of criminal responsibility. Should Clancy be found not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, the court might receive petitions to commit her to a mental health facility. The sentencing for any lesser charges remains uncertain.
As the protracted murder trial nears its conclusion, over 80 witnesses have provided testimony. When asked about predicting the trial’s outcome, Reddington likened it to guessing the winner of the World Series, expressing his uncertainty about the verdict.
