Democratic Establishment Secures Victory Over Socialist Challengers

The Democratic establishment secured a significant win against the left’s socialist insurgency in Saturday’s primaries. Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawaii, emerged victorious in his bid to continue serving in the House of Representatives, overcoming a challenge from state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, a progressive candidate.

Case’s political career includes serving in Congress from 2002 to 2007, returning to office in 2018. This year’s primary posed his most formidable contest as tensions between the Democratic mainstream and the far-left wing grew, resulting in several incumbent losses to socialist newcomers.

Keohokalole, who has been a part of Hawaii’s state legislature since 2014, was seen as the strongest challenger aiming to unseat Case. Both candidates secured significant campaign funds, though Case held a financial advantage at the start of the race.

The progressive contender criticized Case’s actions, particularly his insufficient opposition to Trump-era policies, including federal immigration enforcement. Keohokalole also targeted Case for supporting an early version of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in April 2025, a proposal introducing a federal voter ID requirement and proof of citizenship for voter registration.

Case, defending his stance, stated he does not strictly follow party lines. He voiced that the issue of noncitizen voting does not correlate with voter suppression concerns. Keohokalole argued the proposal addressed a non-existent problem, saying, “There is no security problem in our election system.” In contrast, Case later joined most House Democrats in opposing a revised SAVE America Act, which intended to extend federal influence over state voter rolls.

Following his primary victory, Case is now set to compete against Republican Adriel Lam in November. The 1st Congressional District of Hawaii, covering parts of Oahu including Honolulu, is considered a stronghold for Democrats, rated D+13 by the Cook Political Report.
