Deportation of a Young Boy Sparks Political Debate
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has responded to criticism from Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico. The criticism centers around the deportation of a young boy, Liam Tadeo, and his father, Victor Martinez Nieto, by federal immigration authorities.
Victor and his 5-year-old son were detained in Austin, Texas, earlier this month. They were on their way to a soccer match. Both were deported on Tuesday. Talarico criticized the deportation, highlighting his disapproval of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. He emphasized that Liam should have started kindergarten rather than being deported.
“ICE kidnapped Liam Tadeo on his way to a soccer game with his dad,” Talarico wrote on X. “Liam should be in kindergarten. Instead, our government has thrown him in a prison camp hundreds of miles from home.”
On Thursday, Talarico posted updates about Liam’s deportation. Mullin aimed to clarify the situation. He stated the deportation was conducted at the request of Liam’s father.
According to Mullin, “ICE does NOT separate families.” Parents are given the choice to be deported with their children, or to designate a safe person for their children. Martinez Nieto opted for deportation with his son. Mullin also highlighted that parents are accountable for their children’s circumstances, akin to U.S. citizen parents arrested for legal violations.
Both father and son were held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center. Martinez Nieto had previously re-entered the U.S. illegally after prior deportation. Fox News Digital has reached out to the family’s attorney for further comment.
