The Detroit Lions faced a challenging start to their 2026 NFL season against the New Orleans Saints, narrowly avoiding a historic collapse. Initially leading comfortably, the Lions were pushed to an overtime battle after Saints’ Juwan Johnson caught a touchdown with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter. Despite a valiant effort by Saints kicker Daniel Carlson to tie the game with a 62-yard field goal, his miss sent the contest into overtime.
During the extra period, both teams exchanged touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown scored for the Lions to set the pace, followed by tight end Noah Fant’s response for the Saints. New Orleans coach Kellen Moore opted for a decisive two-point conversion, aiming for victory rather than a tie. However, the Lions’ defense stood strong, thwarting the attempt and securing their win.
If Detroit had squandered their 21-point lead, it would have marked the largest comeback deficit in franchise history resulting in a loss. The team, with aspirations in the NFC North, was relieved to avoid this unwanted record. Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs emerged as a key player, rushing for 156 yards with two touchdowns, and catching 30 yards from Jared Goff. Gibbs’ performance demonstrates his potential as an explosive force, especially bereft of David Montgomery’s presence in the team.
Despite the Lions’ triumph, New Orleans’ quarterback Tyler Shough impressed with 410 passing yards, albeit with two interceptions. His favorite target, Chris Olave, achieved 182 yards from 10 receptions.
