DHS Seeks Custody of Immigrant Accused of Murder

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested that Florida officials transfer Akbor Miah, a Bangladeshi illegal immigrant accused of murder, into federal custody. Miah faces charges after allegedly killing his sister-in-law in Florida. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against him, seeking to take custody after his state criminal proceedings conclude.

Miah first entered the U.S. in 2016 and was deported to Bangladesh in 2019 during the Trump administration. Miah illegally reentered the U.S., a federal offense, and was released by the Biden administration in 2022. Authorities accuse him of the murder, charging him with first-degree murder. His sister-in-law, Monica Islam, was found dead from a gunshot in May 2025.

The investigation revealed Islam’s DNA in Miah’s vehicle. Officials recovered a bullet and evidence of a shattered window. Miah reportedly fled to New York after the murder but was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited to Florida.

Lauren Bis, DHS acting Assistant Secretary, stated, “This illegal alien from Bangladesh has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his own sister-in-law in Florida. He then thought he could evade justice by fleeing to the sanctuary state of New York. Thanks to our law enforcement partners, this criminal illegal alien has been arrested and is off our streets.”

Miah has been indicted on a charge of premeditated first-degree murder. Prosecutors, led by State Attorney Bill Gladson, are seeking the death penalty, citing suspicious internet searches conducted by Miah on the day of the murder. He rented a vehicle to drive to New York before he was tracked down by law enforcement.
