DiCosmo’s Italian Ice, a beloved community fixture in Metuchen, New Jersey, is now offering franchise opportunities to expand nationwide. Established in 1915, the shop started as a neighborhood Italian ice stand in Elizabeth, New Jersey. “It was one of those, ‘If you know, you know. It’s that little green shack,'” shared Eileen O’Connor, the owner, with Fox News Digital.
The family business, a tradition begun by O’Connor’s great-grandparents, is recognized for its authentic Italian ices made from a time-honored recipe. O’Connor recounted that her ancestors emigrated from Italy and were inspired to replicate the granita, a popular Sicilian dessert. Granita is made using water, sugar, and various flavorings like lemon or almond. It’s traditionally enjoyed for breakfast in Sicily.
The recipe, cherished for over a century, involves a hand-squeezed and hand-churned mixture of fruit, water, and sugar. O’Connor emphasized the importance of maintaining the original lemon-ice recipe, which four generations of customers have enjoyed. “I can’t mess with an 111-year-old lemon-ice recipe,” she said. “We use real fruit, sugar, and water, and that’s what you taste.”
DiCosmo’s prides itself on using simple, high-quality ingredients to create a nostalgic experience reminiscent of childhood treats. O’Connor explained that their Italian ice is made fresh daily, which distinguishes their product from those found in freezer aisles filled with stabilizers and emulsifiers. This dedication to freshness and quality is why they seek franchisees instead.
The family tradition continued as O’Connor’s parents dedicated the store entirely to Italian ices, introducing new flavors and processing techniques. O’Connor expressed her passion for the business, stating, “If I stop doing this, DiCosmo’s stops.”
As DiCosmo’s opens up franchise opportunities, interest has already been shown, particularly from the Eastern Seaboard and warmer states. O’Connor, proud of the community-focused atmosphere her shop fosters, celebrates the legacy her family has built. “It’s nostalgic. It tastes like something you might have had in your childhood,” she reflected.
