Diplomatic Tensions Flare as Trump Accuses Iran Amid Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty
On August 4, 2026, President Donald Trump accused Iran of deception, stating that discussions about reopening the Strait of Hormuz were underway. However, Iran denied that any talks were taking place. This diplomatic confusion was heightened by an attack on a cargo vessel near the Oman coast of the Strait. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center, managed by the British navy, reported the incident. This organization is tasked with safeguarding commercial shipping in high-risk zones.
Currently, the flow through the strait remains far below its usual levels. As a result, the international oil benchmark, Brent crude, saw a 2.7% increase on Tuesday. This rise reflects the market’s uncertainty rather than trust in the diplomatic process. Meanwhile, in Tehran, a woman waved an Iranian flag with a banner of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei displayed prominently.
On the preceding Monday, Trump labeled Iran as “unbelievably duplicitous,” accusing them of requesting discussions to resolve the ongoing conflict, only to publicly claim that no such talks were happening. Trump expressed disbelief on Truth Social, highlighting Iran’s contradiction by stating, “They ask for a meeting, some would say ‘beg.’” Talks were supposedly underway with additional ones planned. However, they publicly claimed to have no discussions and were only engaging with Oman.
Responding to Trump’s statements, Iran’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, told reporters, “We currently do not have negotiations with America.” He clarified that Iran was in talks with Oman over creating a temporary safe route through the strait and had no plans for hosting foreign delegations or sending envoys abroad soon.
Meanwhile, Muslim devotees marched past an anti-U.S.-Israel banner in Tehran. Trump later spoke to reporters at the White House, asserting that negotiations with Tehran were indeed happening. “It’s an amazing thing we have a little problem with Iran because we have many talks, and we’ll say we have or we don’t have. You know, we’re straight about it, but they deny it,” Trump remarked. He further noted that Iran was not actively denying negotiations, describing Iran’s latest statements as not a denial.
Regarding the Strait, Trump indicated discussions aimed at reopening the passage as early as tomorrow. He specified, “The parties were discussing ‘having it open literally by tomorrow, completely open, and that’s phase one.’” The next phase of talks would reportedly focus on Iran’s nuclear program. Previously, the president held back from launching severe new strikes against Iran, paving the way for what he described as renewed talks.
In contrast, attacks have been reported from Iran, including one involving a cargo vessel struck by an “unknown projectile” near Oman’s coast. This incident happened on Monday night, according to the UKMTO. Maritime sources informed Reuters that the affected vessel was a dry bulk ship, leading to the crew abandoning the ship with one sailor missing.
On Monday, a view from Musandam, Oman, showed vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. While normally around 100 ships traverse the Strait daily during peacetime, only about six vessels managed to pass on Monday, as reviewed by NBC News using MarineTraffic data.
Many of these vessels, including the Chinese-owned tanker Starway and the Indian-managed Horizon 1, opted for the Iranian passage, sailing south of Larak Island. Without an agreed secure route between Iran and Oman, some ships risk traveling along the Omani coastline with their transponders deactivated, avoiding detection of their precise movements. The ship struck on Monday evening was one such vessel, highlighting the prevailing dangers for those navigating the Strait.
