Last Saturday night, Colin Kaepernick and Jemele Hill participated in a discussion at the National Black Footwear Forum in Detroit, Michigan. The event focused on themes of racism, Kaepernick’s personal life, and his forthcoming memoir, The Perilous Fight. Reporters from OutKick attended the forum, which did not allow audience questions.
During the conversation, Hill referred to a story from Kaepernick’s memoir, highlighting an incident with his mother. The story involved his mother’s suggestion that he date Taylor Swift. Kaepernick and Hill shared their thoughts regarding the push for him to be interested in a girl like Swift, insinuating he was not attracted to white women.
OutKick obtained a copy of Kaepernick’s new book, which includes the narrative about Swift and his mother. Kaepernick reflects on his teenage years, describing how he felt a sense of belonging when he dated a Black girl named Crystal. Through his interactions with Crystal, Kaepernick found acceptance and understanding without needing to explain his experiences. However, Kaepernick’s mother seemed to dismiss this relationship as temporary. Her encouragement for him to date Lindsay, a white girl from her social circle, displayed a different preference.
Years later, my mother suggested I date Taylor Swift, feeling we would be well-matched. No slight to Taylor, but she was simply not my type.
Reflecting on these experiences, Kaepernick expressed disappointment in his mother’s inability to recognize his true self. His memoir conveys how his mother repressed the portrait with Crystal, yet openly displayed the one with Lindsay.
Additionally, Kaepernick shared insights about his upbringing under white parents, who he felt did not fully comprehend or support his cultural identity. This lack of support extended to his national anthem protest. According to him, his parents did not agree with his stance.
During the event, Hill did not refute Kaepernick’s perspectives. Instead, she attributed his past performance challenges to injuries and encouraged NFL teams, like the Atlanta Falcons, to consider him a potential quarterback in 2026.
