Dutch Virologist Investigated for Alleged Smuggling of Biological Materials

Dr. Vincent Munster, a prominent Dutch virologist recognized for his contributions to Covid vaccine development, faces scrutiny from U.S. federal investigators. He is accused of conspiring to smuggle deactivated mpox and other biological materials into the United States. The charges were unveiled last week when a criminal complaint was unsealed.

Dr. Munster, aged 53, heads the virus ecology section at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories, part of the National Institutes of Health in Montana. Alongside him, Claude Kwe, a 38-year-old research assistant from Cameroon, also faces the charges. Customs officials detained both individuals at the Detroit airport following their mission in the Republic of Congo during an mpox outbreak.

The case has gained attention from right-wing influencer Laura Loomer. She has accused Dr. Munster’s institute of attempting to conceal the incident, which has become a focal point for conservative critics. The White Coat Waste Project, an animal rights group, initially disclosed the investigation. They describe Dr. Munster as a possible national security threat.

The White Coat Waste group has consistently criticized Dr. Munster, opposing taxpayer-funded animal testing. They accuse him of conducting dangerous and morally questionable experiments on primates and bats, claiming these actions pose biosafety and national security threats.
