A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred off the northwest coast of Cuba on Monday afternoon. This event was strong enough to be felt in parts of Florida, including South Florida.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake struck approximately 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, situated west of Havana. Reports of light shaking were noted in Florida, a region not typically prone to earthquakes.
Shaking from the recent M6.1 earthquake offshore of Cuba was felt in Florida, where earthquakes are not commonly felt. Did you feel it?
Many Florida residents, from Tampa to Orlando and throughout South Florida, reported feeling the tremors. The City of Miami acknowledged the earthquake’s occurrence near Cuba:
“The City of Miami is aware of a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Cuba,” a statement from the city read. “Resulting seismic activity was reportedly felt in several areas throughout the city, prompting multiple calls for service.” Miami Fire-Rescue responded to each report, confirming no significant injuries or major property damage.
The National Weather Service in Miami assured there was no tsunami threat to South Florida.
Previous Instances of Earthquake Shaking in Florida
Although rare, Florida has experienced shaking from regional earthquakes in the past. In January 2020, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica was felt in Miami and other parts of South Florida. A resident in Aventura at the time noted feeling motion similar to light-headedness while at their desk.
The USGS actively encourages residents to report such experiences, as even the absence of felt shaking contributes valuable data.
