Ebola Outbreak in East Africa Could Worsen, Warns Health Officials

Health workers have issued warnings about the Ebola outbreak in East Africa, describing it as one of the worst in decades. If infection rates do not decline, efforts to contain the virus might extend up to a year.

The outbreak, notably large, primarily affects the Democratic Republic of Congo. Trust issues with authorities and regional violence complicate health workers’ efforts to address the situation.

If we don’t stop the outbreak very soon it will be worse than what we had in West Africa and eastern D.R.C.

This statement from Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa CDC, was made at an emergency conference with African leaders. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reports over 800 confirmed cases and nearly 200 deaths in this outbreak.

The World Health Organization recorded the worst Ebola outbreak between 2014 and 2016 in West Africa, with more than 11,000 fatalities.

Experts align with Dr. Kaseya’s concerns, highlighting challenges faced by health workers. Bruno Michon, handling the Ebola response in Congo for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, states that health teams are trying to keep up with the disease as it spreads.
