In Pennsylvania’s eastern region, the Seventh Congressional District has become a focal point in the political landscape. This area, stretching from Scranton to Allentown, holds significant influence over the control of the House. Voters here are increasingly vocal about their economic struggles.
The Lehigh Valley, where cities like Allentown reside, has been evolving. These cities are experiencing demographic shifts and economic transformations.
Sabrina Tavernise from The New York Times engaged with residents in Allentown, Bethlehem, and Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Her discussions revealed the complex emotions voters face as economic conditions change.
Once characterized by its declining industrial roots, Allentown now boasts new developments. Boutique hotels, specialty coffee shops, and high-rise apartments emerge as signs of economic growth driven by logistics, biotech, and high-tech manufacturing. However, this growth comes with rising expenses and challenges for the working-class community.
“It’s kind of scary,” shared Brian Fasolino, 28, from Jim Thorpe. After six years in the military, he returned home, only to find it difficult to afford independent living despite securing a job.
The Seventh District is notable in Pennsylvania politics. In 2024, this district, along with another, changed hands from Democratic to Republican. Yet, Democrats see a potential shift with their candidate, Bob Brooks. The retired firefighter and union representative aims to connect with the electorate through an economic-centric campaign.
Bob Brooks emphasizes his personal experiences to relate to the district’s voters. Having experienced public housing and food stamps after personal tragedy in his youth, he brings a relatable narrative to his campaign against the Republican incumbent, Ryan Mackenzie.
