Artist Ed Sheeran opened his solo concert in Philadelphia on Saturday by discussing the situation in Gaza. He described the events occurring there as ‘catastrophic and unjustifiable.’ Sheeran emphasized his desire for music and concerts to focus on unity and humanity rather than politics.
Sheeran spoke about the controversy that arose after his supporting acts withdrew in solidarity with Macklemore, who was dropped from the tour for making pro-Palestinian comments during a performance. Sheeran clarified his humanitarian stance, expressing his heartbreak over the devastation and loss of civilian, especially children’s lives, in Gaza.
Macklemore had been Sheeran’s original opener in the U.S. but was replaced by Danish band Lukas Graham and Irish singer Aaron Rowe, both of whom later withdrew. Finneas, Billie Eilish’s brother and collaborator, was set to join Sheeran in South America before his recent decision to drop out.
‘I am already speaking to people across the spectrum to work out how to make a contribution that helps victims of these terrible times, and listening, and learning, because I do not know enough,’ Sheeran told the crowd.
The concert followed a week in which Macklemore was removed from the tour after shouting ‘Free Palestine’ at a show. Sheeran stated that he wasn’t responsible for the decision, which New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft influenced. Macklemore alleged his removal came after Kraft’s intervention.
Macklemore announced a $1 million donation to Palestinian relief efforts, challenging Kraft to match the donation. A spokesperson said both Kraft and Sheeran agreed to donate $2 million, although the recipients remain unspecified.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Philadelphia issued an open letter questioning Macklemore’s removal and whether it related to his Palestinian support. This raised concerns about free speech.
A small group of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered near the concert venue, voicing their thoughts on Sheeran’s approach. One protester emphasized the need for support for Palestinians, regardless of concert cancellations.
The anticipated protests influenced fans’ decisions, with some opting for early arrivals or public transportation to the concert. Fans expressed disappointment over missing opening acts, although some sympathized with Sheeran, feeling he was unjustly blamed.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel assured that protestors could express their rights while ensuring concert attendees could enjoy the event without disruption. Additional police assets were deployed in the area to maintain order.
