PHILADELPHIA — Ed Sheeran commenced his solo concert on Saturday with remarks concerning Gaza, amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding his tour. This arose after supporting acts opted out in solidarity with Macklemore—a previous opener—who was excluded after expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments on stage.
Sheeran emphasized that his music and performances ought to focus on unity and humanity, moving away from political themes. He acknowledged the appalling attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, and labeled the situation in Gaza as ‘catastrophic and unjustifiable.’
I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,Sheeran stated during his performance at Lincoln Financial Field.
His remarks were delivered before an audience filling nearly the entire stadium, following a challenging week initiated when Macklemore—Sheeran’s original U.S. opener—was dropped after advocating to ‘Free Palestine’ during a concert in New Jersey on September 5.
Sheeran clarified he wasn’t responsible for this decision, which was influenced by Robert Kraft, owner of New England Patriots. Kraft’s company owns a venue scheduled for Sheeran’s tour. Supporting acts withdrew within hours of Sheeran’s statement on Tuesday. Sheeran typically performs solo during his Loop Tour concerts but joins the Irish folk band Beoga for several songs at each stop.
Macklemore was substituted by the Danish band Lukas Graham and Irish singer Aaron Rowe, both of whom later left. Finneas, associated with Billie Eilish, was set to tour with Sheeran in South America, but he too withdrew this week.
Prior to the concert, a minor assembly of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the stadium. Hillary Steinberg, a 34-year-old, shared she obtained concert tickets a year ago but chose to receive a refund and participate in the protest, expressing disappointment over Sheeran’s lack of action. I was, until this week, a big Ed Sheeran fan,
Steinberg remarked. All art is political, and all music is political, and this choice is a political choice
Another attendee, Diane Savitz, 53, from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, indicated her support for Sheeran and argued that political discussions should not interrupt a concert. A concert should be for people enjoying the music. Music should bring people together,
she stated.
Macklemore pledged $1 million towards Palestinian relief efforts, challenging Kraft to match it. A spokesperson for Kraft revealed that the billionaire and Sheeran agreed to donate $2 million each, without specifying the recipients. Sheeran’s representatives haven’t addressed several inquiries.
Sheeran’s Loop Tour ranked as the highest-grossing globally, with an average box office gross exceeding $7 million per city, as reported by Pollstar in May. Up to the end of 2025, Sheeran was the third top-earning concert performer since 2021.
Sheeran reiterated that the tour promoter was responsible for dropping Macklemore. The Grammy-winning artist stressed his intention to keep his focus away from the Gaza conflict, stating fans attend his concerts for music rather than political dialogue.
Spoke with the venues at length all week to try to build a bridge,Sheeran affirmed, would never willingly let down his fans or abandon the touring crew and others who rely on him
While promoters and venues have considerable power over concert tours, experts suggest artists like Sheeran typically hold the final authority regarding show decisions. Sheeran assured the Philadelphia audience that differing opinions are welcome at his concerts, where the themes revolve around love, hope, and unity.
Sheeran voiced concerns over venues preapproving performances, stating This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world.
