Edvardas Stasys’ Rising Recruitment Journey

The recruitment process is intensifying for Benet senior forward Edvardas Stasys. Standing at 6-foot-8, Stasys recently received an offer from Illinois, marking his first from a Big Ten institution. ‘I’m super grateful for this opportunity,’ Stasys expressed, acknowledging the significance of the offer from the Illini staff. As a strategic move, he is not rushing into decisions and plans to visit multiple schools before finalizing his choice in a few months.

Exploring options for studying finance or business, Stasys is meticulously evaluating offers from an expanding list of interested colleges, including Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Belmont, Central Michigan, Harvard, Holy Cross, Robert Morris, Western Michigan, and Yale. The inclusion of Illinois, which progressed to the Final Four under Coach Brad Underwood earlier in the year, has heightened excitement around his recruitment process.

Blake Fagbemi, a sophomore point guard with Illinois, was Stasys’ teammate for two seasons at Benet, contributing to the Redwings’ first Class 4A state championship in 2025. Illinois has actively pursued talent in Chicago’s western suburbs, securing commitments like Neuqua Valley’s senior guard Mason Martin. The Illini’s recruitment strategy includes several Benet connections, such as junior forward Cole Kelly, who also received an offer.

“I think it’s great for all those individuals,” Benet coach Gene Heidkamp remarked. “Illinois is a respected program. They have one of our players there now. It’s encouraging to see them succeed and recruit in the western suburbs.”

Stasys’ offer from Illinois underlines his developmental progress. Coach Heidkamp voiced his pride, noting the significance of Stasys receiving attention from multiple schools and the prestige of being offered by a Big Ten college. Next season, Stasys is expected to be pivotal for the Redwings, especially after the graduation of key players like Jayden Wright and Colin Stack.

Having earned All-State third-team honors with junior year averages of 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, Stasys continues growing as Benet’s central figure. Heidkamp anticipates a standout season, seeing Stasys build upon his existing success. As a sophomore, Stasys played a crucial reserve role during Benet’s state championship win. Last season, he adapted to an increased responsibility when the Redwings reached the championship game but fell short to Marist.

With high expectations on his shoulders, Stasys is tasked with leading Benet’s offensive charge. He has diversified by honing ball-handling skills and becoming proficient in various positions. ‘He’s done a lot more handling the ball. He plays well in the post and can slash,’ Heidkamp noted. ‘He’s a strong offensive rebounder and excels in transition. We won’t confine him to a specific position.’

Stasys is committed to developing his offensive capabilities. ‘Shooting and playmaking are key focuses,’ he explained. ‘I’ve gained confidence with the ball in my hands, transitioning from a primarily defensive role as a sophomore.’ His aim remains consistent: securing another state championship for Benet while fulfilling multifaceted roles.

During the recruitment process, Stasys seeks programs offering top-tier basketball and community engagement. He values extensive player development and quality academics. Though his sister Gabby plays volleyball at Yale and enjoys the community there, Stasys is charting his own course. With insights into Illinois from Fagbemi, and familial ties to Yale, he is weighing his options. ‘I have seen how well Yale has treated my sister, but my journey is unique. My focus is high-level basketball, a supportive community, and development opportunities,’ Stasys concluded.
