Emergency Response to Chemical Tank Crisis in Southern California

Emergency crews undertook a critical operation at a Southern California aerospace facility to address a chemical tank issue. The internal temperature of the tank rose to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency. Over 40,000 residents were evacuated.

Orange County Fire Authority Incident Commander Greg Covey reported the challenging conditions faced by crews overnight. They manually measured the tank’s temperature, which had climbed from 77 degrees on Friday to 90 degrees. The potential outcomes include a possible spill of 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of chemicals or a thermal explosion.

Crews, aided by a chemist team, aimed to neutralize a 15,000-gallon tank to prevent an explosion. Officials devised a strategy involving continuous water flow to slow the hardening process of the chemical, potentially preventing an explosive reaction. They hope the void space in the tank will contain any overpressure.

Responders have set up diking and damming procedures to divert any possible spill, preventing chemicals from contaminating water systems and the ocean. Covey emphasized the importance of avoiding an environmental disaster.

Authorities first identified methyl methacrylate, a flammable plastic epoxy, leaking from the tank at GKN Aerospace. Initial cooling measures seemed effective, leading to a temporary return of residents. However, the situation worsened by Friday, necessitating continued efforts to control the temperature.

Garden Grove Police Chief Amir El-Farra extended evacuation zones for public safety. Health officials, including Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, warned of severe risks if the chemical vapor is inhaled. Residents are advised they are safe if outside the danger zone.

Representatives, including Derek Tran, remain engaged with federal agencies like FEMA and the EPA. Efforts continue to protect public health and resolve the crisis.
