Emma Peterson Shines in Geneva’s Nonconference Victory
Emma Peterson from Geneva is eager to advance in her volleyball career, guided by her coach, Lauren Kosecki. A former Division I volleyball player at Northern Illinois and Michigan State, Kosecki offers Peterson valuable insights for her development as she prepares to join Dayton.
Peterson, expressing appreciation for Kosecki’s expertise, noted, “It’s really nice because she knows everything about it. She’s easy to go to for anything.” While guidance helps, Peterson’s natural talent also plays a crucial role. As a junior outside hitter, she delivered 16 kills in a recent match against West Aurora, leading the Vikings to a 25-9, 26-24 victory.
Throughout the second game, Geneva struggled, losing a 9-2 lead and trailing 22-20. However, Peterson’s impressive 10 kills helped secure the win for Geneva, improving their record to 5-4. Teammate Zori Malone contributed six kills and six aces. West Aurora’s Natalie Mitchell, Paige Werve, and Aiyanah Vega also made notable plays with six, five, and two kills respectively.
Peterson’s journey has seen significant progress since her talents first emerged last season as a varsity player. She has accumulated 112 kills this season, showcasing her growth. Kosecki has witnessed this development, stating, “She’s more confident. We talked about her being a leader, and she’s done a really nice job stepping up.” Peterson is recognized for her aggression in play, seizing out-of-system opportunities instead of settling for simple returns.
Geneva faced challenges in a previous match against St. Charles North, losing 25-19, 13-25, 25-23. Peterson and the team were determined to apply their lessons, emphasizing aggressiveness. “Coach was like, ‘We were in this situation on Tuesday and we kind of crumbled,’” Peterson said. “I think that doing this definitely proved that we can do it.”
Geneva initially led the second game against West Aurora 9-2 but faced fierce competition, with the Blackhawks taking a 22-20 lead. West Aurora coach Alyssa Farney praised her team’s efforts, saying, “I’m proud of us for turning it around, because it’s not an easy thing to do.”
Faced with the possibility of a third game, Peterson’s consecutive kills forced a tie, leading to West Aurora errors that concluded the match. The back-row play proved crucial; both Peterson and Malone excelled in this aspect. Peterson remarked, “It’s definitely something that’s been really effective.”
Emma Peterson’s performance underscores her potential and determination. Her development is clear, reinforced by guidance from Kosecki, as Geneva seeks continued success.
