The England men’s national team has arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, to begin their training for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With temperatures in several host cities expected to be high, adapting to the heat is as important as tactical practice.
To address potential heat-related issues, England players will utilize cutting-edge palm-cooling devices. As reported by BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel, these devices are designed to lower core body temperature, aiding in recovery and enhancing performance during games. The plan is to use them both in training and scheduled water breaks during matches.
NPR highlights that 67 of the 104 tournament matches will occur under conditions posing a risk of heat illnesses, with 39 matches deemed high risk. Ensuring player safety and performance is a priority, and these innovative cooling methods provide a crucial advantage.
The team will kick off their World Cup journey against Croatia on June 17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The expected high temperature is 90 degrees, with a ‘realfeel’ of 97 degrees, although the stadium’s roof mitigates heat exposure. Subsequent group matches include Ghana on June 23 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and Panama on June 27 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
England reached the quarterfinals in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This time, the expectation is to achieve a similar or superior outcome. Having the third-best odds, England is hopeful to claim their first World Cup victory since 1966.
