On Monday, Israeli strikes and tank fire resulted in the deaths of at least four people in Gaza, including two children. This follows a plea from a U.S. delegation for Israel to reduce its military actions. After warnings from Israel’s military, a strike destroyed a building in the Bureij refugee camp. A 4-year-old boy died, according to Awda Hospital, which also reported injuries to his mother and sister. The Israeli military did not comment on this incident.
Strikes affected three additional buildings, with residents receiving evacuation alerts. Amidst panic, people fled with children in tow, some using wheelchairs or canes to navigate through the debris.
Smoke and destruction engulfed the landscape as Israel’s military operations targeted areas in the Shati refugee camp and Deir al-Balah. They claimed these sites housed Hamas weapons, though no evidence was presented. Weapons reportedly included Kalashnikov rifles and other equipment.
An earlier attack in Deir al-Balah resulted in the death of a man associated with Hamas’ special forces. Al-Aqsa Hospital managed his remains. The tension extended to Khan Younis in southern Gaza, where an Israeli strike killed a man and injured several others. In another strike, a 10-year-old girl was killed east of Khan Younis. Victims were reported to Nasser Hospital. The Israeli military offered no comments on these events.
Following a meeting with U.S. negotiator Jared Kushner, who urged Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to limit military activities, Israel has conducted operations each day since, countering expectations for reduced aggression. The discussions aimed to move forward with last year’s ceasefire agreement.
Even as major confrontations have decreased since the October ceasefire, at least 1,288 Palestinians have died from Israeli airstrikes, based on Gaza’s health ministry data. The data, considered reliable by U.N. entities and analysts, does not distinguish between civilian and militant casualties.
In contrast, five Israeli soldiers have died from militant attacks targeting troops and violating the ceasefire. Hamas alleged that Israel’s strategy is to disrupt Gaza’s stability and stall the ceasefire’s next phases, which aim at de-escalation and reconstruction.
Recently, tension heightened with Israeli concerns about kites sent from Gaza. Previously, incendiary kites caused damage in Israel. Recently, kites, found in a kibbutz near Gaza, were not armed, but this rekindled Israeli warnings. Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened increased strikes unless Hamas controls these activities.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem characterized the kites as “children’s toys,” accusing Israel of manipulating the situation to justify ongoing hostility.
