Explosion at Hydropower Project in India: Rescue and Relief Efforts

An explosion occurred in the tunnel of an under-construction hydropower project in Samardung, India, caused by suspected methane from rocks. This resulted in dense fumes and toxic gases, trapping 25 individuals. Rescue teams are actively working at the site.

At least seven bodies have been recovered from the site, increasing the death count to 22, as announced by the Sikkim state government. The calamity took place on Monday at the National Hydroelectric Power Corp Ltd.’s project situated on the Teesta river.

The incident led to thick smoke and gases filling the tunnel, endangering workers and NHPC officials. Rescue operations are ongoing, with specialized teams striving to find and retrieve those still unaccounted for. A post from the Sikkim state government confirmed this update.

Chances of survival for those trapped are deemed slim due to challenges like mud and water accumulation and breathing difficulties caused by the gas leak, as stated by officials earlier.

NHPC announced compensation for the victims’ families, promising 500,000 Indian rupees (approximately $5,178) in ex-gratia relief to those affected by the tragedy.
