Two explosions at the May Ship Repair Contracting Corporation on Staten Island resulted in the death of a subcontractor and injuries to dozens. The incident occurred after a fire erupted on a dock under construction, which had been a focus for the company for nine months without prior issues.
Nadia Adam, the executive vice president of May Ship Repair, expressed the company’s commitment to safety and its ongoing cooperation with investigations by both the Fire Department and the Police Department. She stated that understanding the cause of the incident is a top priority.
The deceased subcontractor, who had a family, was recognized for his previous collaborations with the company. Ms. Adam highlighted the nature of May Ship Repair as a small, family-run business employing under 50 people locally.
The explosions rattled the shipyard just before 3:30 p.m. on Friday. At that time, Ms. Adam was informed of the explosion while in her office. The company promptly contacted emergency services and adhered to its safety procedures.
