F.B.I. Alleged Shift in Investigating Immigration Agent Confrontations

Senior officials refuted claims of a policy change regarding F.B.I. investigations into confrontations involving immigration agents. These claims followed guidance shared with agents nationwide, which suggested the bureau might cease such investigations.

Federal agents were recently informed of a potential shift in F.B.I. responsibilities, which, if adopted, could reduce oversight of immigration agents. The Trump administration continues to face criticism amid recent fatal incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Texas and Maine.

An anonymous source confirmed that F.B.I. leaders received a notice last Thursday detailing the supposed change in policy. The same notification indicated ICE agents had been informed by F.B.I. colleagues that investigations into assaults against Homeland Security agents would end.

These investigations aim to establish whether the officers were victims of assault. They also gather evidence that could implicate agents in wrongdoing.

A joint statement from the Justice Department and Homeland Security denied any policy change. It asserted that the investigation of assaults on federal officers continues unchanged. The statement emphasized the administration’s commitment to prosecuting those who assault law enforcement to the fullest extent of the law.
