The evening of Halloween carried a chill in the October air, as my family and I prepared to celebrate yet another holiday season. Our house, decorated with pumpkins and orange and black tones, exuded the spooky spirit of the night. As I toasted to the beginning of the festivities, a strange sensation emerged. The usual enjoyment of a drink soured, as though my body had turned against alcohol.
The unease persisted, leading me to alter my holiday meals and drinks in 2021, determined to prevent another unsettling Halloween. November arrived, but my discomfort lingered—a gnawing sensation lodged within me.
My doctor’s visit centered around concerns with my weight and diet, resulting in over-the-counter medications. Feeling dismissed, I continued my busy life as a mom and business owner. Yet, a month later, with no relief, I returned to the doctor. Blood tests focused on cholesterol and blood cells revealed little. Seeking progress, I consulted a gastroenterologist, who prescribed medication for six weeks. Despite these efforts, I felt unheard as I continued to lose weight.
By January 2022, I couldn’t ignore the persistent feeling any longer. During a vacation, I discovered a lump in my stomach with intense back pain. Returning home promptly, I sought an ultrasound. Lying on the examination table, I sensed trouble as the technician’s inquisitive nature surfaced, particularly when I shared my mother’s history with cancer.
My mother, diagnosed at age 12 with a neuroendocrine tumor in her lung, left a lasting impact. The technician’s words, “Oh, you’re so young,” followed by a comforting hug, marked a turning point.
I immediately called my husband. “There is definitely something wrong with me,” I conveyed, understanding the technician’s implications.
That evening, the doctor confirmed a large mass in my pancreas. Desperation filled me as clinics and hospitals opened the next morning, leading to a CAT scan revealing a tumor resembling a softball size. Compressed organs and bile ducts described my bloated feelings. The biopsy results puzzled the doctor, who faced a complex tumor.
“Could this be a neuroendocrine tumor perhaps?” I proposed, aware of my non-medical background but informed by my mother’s fate. The diagnosis, pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer with metastasis, surfaced in February 2022.
March brought surgery to remove the tumor, the pancreas’s tail, spleen, and lymph nodes. Recovery led to whole-body PET scans, revealing metastasized cancer in my bones and liver. Annually, around 8,000 neuroendocrine tumors arise in the gastrointestinal tract, numbering one or two among 100,000 people.
Like my mother, I entered these statistics, battling cancer. Trial treatments proved grueling—wheelchair confinement, stroke, skin changes, fluctuating blood pressure, and rapid weight loss. Although temporary stability followed, I understood the meds posed a threat.
The fall ushered a crucial conversation with my oncologist regarding my prognosis. Initial hesitation gave way to honesty: a two to three-year life expectancy awaited me as my daughter entered the room.
Realizing my finite time spurred urgent aspirations, with family and bucket list adventures central to my quest. From Alaska’s glaciers to a family cruise encompassing Turkey, Greece, and Italy, each experience proved invaluable.
Travel joined personal goals, including viewing the Northern Lights, achieved unexpectedly in New Jersey. “It was like God gave me this opportunity,” I reflected.
Neuroendocrine tumors remain an unknown to many, despite their presence in legends like Steve Jobs, Aretha Franklin, and Irrfan Khan. Raising awareness and funds for research empowers new treatments. While genetic links were uncertain, my mother’s and my history bred concern for future generations.
Rare cancers silently exist, impacting anyone. I urge embracing life without waiting for a terminal diagnosis. Lessons imparted by my mother underscored joy despite adversity, encouraging my children to explore paths toward fulfillment.
Facing limited time, I hope to inspire through resilience and determination. With my family in New Jersey, our continued pursuit of experiences persists, while I cherish each moment of life.
