Family Seeks Answers in ICE Officer-Involved Shooting in Houston
The family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican man shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston, demands answers from the Trump administration. Salgado Araujo died in the hospital following an incident with federal immigration officers. This occurred just before 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Officials stated that ICE aimed to apprehend Salgado Araujo as part of a targeted enforcement operation.
According to ICE, Salgado Araujo used his van to ram an ICE vehicle. He allegedly refused to follow commands and tried to run the ICE officer over. An agency spokesperson said the officer shot in self-defense. Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo Salgado, described his father as a ‘man of routine’ and a hardworking local business owner for 35 years, striving for the American dream. He was on his way to work when the encounter happened.
Three other men, including Salgado Araujo’s brother, were taken into federal custody. “My father did not deserve this,” Ronaldo Salgado wrote on Facebook. An ICE spokesperson mentioned that the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is investigating the shooting. The FBI is also examining the potential assault on a federal officer.

Upon arriving at the hospital, he learned about his father’s passing through a local news report. His father dedicated over two decades to building homes in suburban Houston. He was nearing legal immigration status and had recently finished a home for his family.
“I am deeply heartbroken to see that the man who taught me the value of hard work, family values, and education will no longer spend time on that porch,” Ronaldo Salgado said.
Calls for Transparent Investigation
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has started a petition demanding an investigation into the shooting. They want all evidence made public. LULAC officials at a news conference compared the incident to a previous case in Minneapolis. Juan Proaño, LULAC National CEO, stated that they would persist until they uncover the truth about Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s death. Roman Palomares, LULAC National President, labeled the shooting as “unacceptable and un-American.” State and local officials have echoed calls for an independent inquiry.
Houston’s Democratic Mayor, John Whitmire, emphasized the tragic and complex nature of the incident. He acknowledged that the city lacks access to necessary evidence and witnesses but underscored the need for transparency and independence in any investigation.

Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones criticized the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement. She highlighted breaches in public trust and constitutional rights. Houston City Councilwoman Dr. Letitia Plummer called for an independent investigation, referencing similar incidents in Minnesota. She urged for more than accepting ICE’s version of events.
U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. She affirmed that Salgado Araujo had no criminal record, drawing parallels to past events in Minneapolis. She committed to ensuring that answers are provided to the community.
