There is ongoing uncertainty about whether USMNT striker Folarin Balogun will participate in the Round of 16 against Belgium. This follows his receipt of a red card during a 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. The incident occurred on Wednesday night after Balogun stepped on the ankle of defender Tarik Muharemovic in the 64th minute. As a result, the U.S. team played the remaining 36 minutes with ten players.
The USMNT had no way to appeal the decision initially. FIFA announced on Friday that Balogun, the leading scorer for the U.S. at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, would be suspended for one game, affecting the match against Belgium. However, a report on Sunday indicated a reversal. FIFA decided to suspend Balogun’s red card for a year, allowing him to play in the next match.
“Drama unfolded not only on social media but across the globe. UEFA criticized FIFA’s action to suspend the red card.”
Following the backlash, FIFA appears open to possibly reinstating the red card ahead of Monday night. According to Adam Crafton of The Athletic, Belgium may appeal the suspension of Balogun’s red card by 5 a.m. PST. U.S. Soccer must also submit its appeal by the same deadline. A decision could potentially be made before the match, meaning the red card suspension might be overturned at the last moment.
The appeals process raises questions about FIFA’s decision-making. The inability of the USMNT to appeal at the time contrasts sharply with Belgium’s ability to contest the suspension. This inconsistency leaves both teams unprepared, unsure if the U.S.’s top striker will be available.
