Paul Finebaum expressed doubts about Arch Manning’s performance after Texas lost to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns, previously ranked No. 1 nationally, fell to the Sooners 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl. Manning threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter, contributing to Oklahoma overcoming a 10-point deficit.
Finebaum, who previously praised Manning as a potential Heisman Trophy winner, shared his concerns on ‘The Matt Barrie Show.’ He stated, ‘We showed arrogance in believing Arch Manning could do anything. He almost succeeded, but ultimately, his performance left me questioning his future. Manning is not the elite player we all imagined.’
Despite some notable plays in the SEC matchup, Manning completed 19 out of 31 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. However, in his junior year, he has yet to become a star, averaging 7.7 yards per pass attempt.
Finebaum mentioned that Manning can excel in certain moments, such as a crucial pass that set up a touchdown toward the game’s end. However, he also criticized Manning’s decision-making at other times.
Though Manning orchestrated a 75-yard drive to even the score at 24-24 with 3:35 left, the Longhorns managed only 64 yards in four other drives during the fourth quarter. His second interception set up Tate Sandell’s 47-yard winning field goal as time expired.
Texas and Manning aim to bounce back in their upcoming game against the Florida Gators on Saturday afternoon.
