First Day of School: Traditions, Excitement, and New Beginnings Across the U.S.
Los Angeles, Calif.
At Micheltorena Street Elementary, a unique tradition welcomes kindergarteners a day early to help them adjust smoothly. Nichole Sakellarion, the principal for 11 years, started this initiative after realizing the transition challenges faced by young students. Fifth graders like Gerald Gomez-Reina assist new kindergarteners, offering support and guidance in what they call ‘toolbox coaching’. This approach includes helping younger students manage emotions, like sadness or anxiety, through techniques such as deep breathing or using imagery like ‘throwing away feelings’. On the official first day, these young students are ushered by their fifth-grade mentors, who show them around the school and offer comfort with toys, such as Gerald’s Rocket the Raccoon. Parents watch, with emotional waves, as their children embark on a new journey, often tear-free thanks to this welcoming tradition.
“It’s really to make them feel a little more connected,” Sakellarion said.
Edmond, Okla.
At Will Rogers Elementary, some families embrace a different mode of transport: the bike bus. Around 25 students with their parents choose to cycle to school instead of driving. This movement started to promote bicycling as seen in Oregon and now gathers once a week. On their route, first grader Hayden Raupe expressed enthusiasm, favoring biking over waiting in long car lines. His brother, Owen, echoed this sentiment, encouraging others to join the biking group.
Beaverton, Ore.
Beaverton High School introduces everyone to a fresh start in a brand new building. The school’s 110-year-old bell continues its tradition, ringing student faces into unfamiliar corridors. Despite the new environment, efforts have been made to keep the atmosphere warm and welcoming. Teachers, like Leah Baird, appreciate the new technological amenities, such as adjustable classroom lighting that aids students’ sensory needs. Features like a colorful ceramic mosaic offer visual cues to help students, like identifying sea turtles, as they navigate the school’s layout.
Principal Andrew Kearl noted the incorporation of features to keep the environment engaging and student-friendly.
Charles City County, Va.
Charles City Elementary opens its doors with a red carpet welcome. Catering to preschool through older students, the first day evokes mixed emotions. Kelly Orrell, a preschool teacher with 11 years of experience, understands the anxieties that come with starting school. She eases students with stories like ‘The Kissing Hand’, which parallels their own experiences. For parents, a ‘boo-hoo breakfast’ offers a space to share their feelings as their children adapt to the school setting. Jovan Howard, after dropping off his son, Nolan, acknowledges the bittersweet emotions accompanying this new chapter.
