Fitness expert Jillian Michaels addresses a hazardous trend among Americans buying unregulated weight-loss peptides online and self-dosing without medical supervision. These foreign-sourced, unapproved chemical compounds can lead to severe health risks, including heart issues, vision loss, and hormonal imbalances.
Speaking on the “Fox News Rundown,” Michaels emphasized the need for thorough research and consultation with a doctor before considering such compounds as viable options. She cautioned against treating these peptides as miracle drugs and stressed the importance of not self-administering them based on information from online forums.
Although acquiring peptide drugs online is relatively easy, Michaels pointed out that many consumers are unaware of the actual source of these products. She urged Americans to refrain from using these drugs independently and instead seek guidance from medical professionals.
“Compounded drugs can be important for overcoming shortages or meeting unique patient needs — but compounders should not try to compound drugs in a way that circumvents FDA’s approval process,” FDA Commissioner Marty Makary stated.
The federal government has intensified its efforts to combat the illegal sales and misleading marketing of GLP-1 compounds. In March, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued 30 warning letters to telehealth companies for false or misleading claims regarding compounded GLP-1 products. In June, the FDA warned about unapproved GLP-1 drugs, highlighting the risks since these versions do not undergo FDA’s review for safety, effectiveness, and quality. Vendors falsely labeled chemicals as “for research purposes only.”
Michaels argued that the surge of illegal sales stems from individuals seeking quick weight loss inspired by extreme body transformations in pop culture. She noted that many people, especially in major cities, are buying these substances from gray-market sources to achieve drastic changes, often seeing similar outcomes among famous celebrities.
While FDA-approved GLP-1s can be suitable under medical supervision for individuals with severe obesity or chronic health conditions, Michaels warned against using them or unapproved peptides for minor weight loss due to overlooked risks. Side effects can be severe, including vision loss and suicidal thoughts.
If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
Michaels pointed out that discontinuing the use of unregulated weight-loss compounds can lead to a rapid increase in hunger. The disruption to natural hormone production often results in a cycle of yo-yo dieting, complicating users’ efforts to stabilize their biochemistry.
These substances are not to be used lightly or for vanity purposes due to their potential dangers.
