Folarin Balogun’s journey began with a defining goal in the first World Cup match against Paraguay. This goal, where he skillfully bent the ball in with his right foot, is a technique he has honed for years. Kevin Betsy, who coached Balogun with Arsenal’s under-23s and the England youth teams, recounts this skill as something Balogun mastered from a young age.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in East London, Balogun has been a sensation for Mauricio Pochettino’s team from their first World Cup game. Scoring twice in a 4-1 victory over Paraguay, he then contributed significantly to victories over Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, his World Cup journey faced a hiccup when he received a red card after a VAR review confirmed a dangerous tackle.
“To have gone to America and to have had him there, it is just something that has really stuck with me.” – Florence, Balogun’s mother
After intervention from notable figures including U.S. President Donald Trump, Balogun’s suspension was lifted, marking another chapter in his fascinating life story. He was born in the U.S. while his pregnant mother, Florence, was unable to fly back home. They stayed in Brooklyn for nearly two months before returning to the UK.
Originally representing England at youth level, Balogun opted to play for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) in May 2023, finding the net first a month after his decision. His football career kicked off with Arsenal at age 10, but it required a second trial after being initially released. Two loans, first to Middlesbrough and then to Reims in France, helped him develop, with the latter stint in Ligue 1 becoming successful.
Balogun’s early skills were evident at Aldersbrook Athletic in East London, where his coach, Peter Hucker, noted his intelligence and maturity on the field. Initially playing as a central defender, Balogun quickly caught Arsenal’s attention. A scout named Alan Knowles played a crucial role in bringing him back to the club for a successful second trial.
Excelling in Arsenal’s youth teams, Balogun signed his first professional contract in February 2019. He eventually reached Arsenal’s first team under Mikel Arteta, debuting in the Premier League during a challenging game for Arsenal.
Kevin Betsy recalls discussions with Arteta about giving Balogun, along with teammate Eddie Nketiah, match practice. Balogun’s leadership potential was recognized early, and he became captain for several youth matches to enhance his development.
The stint with Middlesbrough presented challenges. Forward Duncan Watmore recalls Balogun’s finishing prowess, emphasizing the young striker’s natural ability and promising character. A challenging time in the Championship taught Balogun resilience, a formative experience for any young player.
Balogun sought additional skills coaching from Saul Isaksson-Hurst before his move to Reims. This preparation focused on enhancing his finishing and positioning, integral skills for his role as a striker.
In Ligue 1 under coach Will Still, Balogun scored consistently, which propelled his decision to commit to the USMNT. After representing the U.S. in the 2024 Copa America and England’s under-17s in 2018, it was evident that international tournaments were not new to him.
His professional growth culminated in a significant transfer to Monaco in August 2023. Learning from Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, Balogun adapted quickly, even as injuries presented setbacks. He finished one season with an impressive goal tally, proving his capability and enduring determination.
Ian Foster, a former coach for England’s under-17 side, praised Balogun for his ruthlessness inside the box and his ability to link play. Foster recounts Balogun’s missed penalty in a 2018 tournament, admiring his courage and the support from his teammates.
