Former BYU Player Mourns Loss of Son in Tragic Drowning
Former BYU Cougars football player Curtis Brown and his family are grieving after the tragic loss of their two-year-old son, Haze. The accident occurred at their home in Clovis, California, where Haze drowned in the family’s pool on July 26. The Clovis Police confirmed the incident to the New York Post.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched by Chandler Pearson, a family friend, to support the Brown family. The page describes the tragedy as an “unimaginable loss” and emphasizes the deep heartache experienced by Curtis and his wife Kim. The campaign aims to alleviate financial burdens such as funeral expenses, allowing the family to concentrate on healing together.
“Kim and Curtis recently lost their miracle baby, Haze, in a tragic drowning accident,” Pearson wrote. “No words can ease the heartbreak they are facing as they grieve the loss of their precious son.”
The campaign has received $77,375 toward a goal of $100,000. Contributions and acts of kindness serve as reminders of community support and love.
According to the New York Post, a family member discovered Haze unresponsive in the pool. Emergency responders, including police, EMTs, and firefighters, arrived at the scene. Attempts to revive Haze with CPR were unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Clovis Police Department spokesman Ty Wood remarked on the importance of supervision around water, urging adults to never leave children unattended while swimming and to be prepared with CPR training and rescue equipment.
Curtis Brown and his wife have five children, including their son Trey and triplets Cruze, Julie, and Kash.
Curtis Brown had a notable football career at BYU, playing from 2002 to 2006. His performance improved significantly by 2004, achieving 789 yards with six touchdowns. In 2005, he led the Mountain West Conference with 14 rushing touchdowns and 1,123 rushing yards. He also added 454 receiving yards and two more touchdowns that year. His final collegiate season yielded 1,010 rushing yards and 566 receiving yards, with a total of 10 touchdowns over 13 games.
Browns’ career at BYU saw him accumulate 3,241 rushing yards and 1,309 receiving yards, with 36 touchdowns during 52 games. His rushing record stood until it was surpassed in 2009 by Harvey Unga.
Post-college, Brown joined the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2007. After four preseason appearances, the team released him before regular-season play began.
