Former Rep. Kay Granger Remembered as a Barrier-Breaking Leader

Former Representative Kay Granger, a Republican from Texas, passed away on Sunday at the age of 83. Known for her groundbreaking achievements, she left a lasting impact as a pioneer for women.

Granger was celebrated as the first woman elected as mayor of Fort Worth, Texas. Making history again, she became the first Republican woman from Texas to secure a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. In addition, she was the first female Republican to chair the Appropriations Committee.

Serving in the U.S. House since 1997, Granger retired in January of the previous year, stepping down due to health issues and prolonged absences from Washington. Her presence was missed at various political events including a meeting of the House Republican Conference at the Capitol Hill Club.

Republican lawmakers fondly remembered Granger as a trailblazer who paved the way for women in politics. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated, “Kay Granger devoted her life to serving her Fort Worth, Texas community. She served as a teacher and businesswoman, on the Fort Worth Zoning Commission and City Council, as Mayor, and in Congress for nearly three decades. As Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, she continuously broke barriers for women in public service.”
