Controversy Surrounds Braiden Bell’s Firing
Braiden Bell, a former play-by-play announcer for the Portland Trail Blazers, is requesting reinstatement after being dismissed shortly following his appointment. Bell’s dismissal stemmed from social media posts he made over a decade ago as a teenager.
The 29-year-old was hired from the Phoenix Mercury to succeed Kevin Calabro, and he was set to become the NBA’s youngest lead broadcaster. Nevertheless, the Trail Blazers terminated his contract due to tweets Bell published at the age of 15, which resurfaced online.
In late 2012, Bell tweeted disparagingly about Asian people, followed by a post in 2013 expressing negative sentiments towards black individuals.
“I’m not racist at all.. But not gonna lie.. Asian people p— me off! Hahaha #Honest.”
“no blacks either. #racist.”
These tweets led to his abrupt firing. Bell subsequently retained sports employment attorney Arnie Herz, known for his successful representation of Jacob Tobey in reinstatement negotiations with the San Antonio Spurs.
Attorney’s Appeal for Bell’s Reinstatement
Herz issued a statement advocating for Bell’s return to the broadcast team, questioning whether comments made by a teenager should define his adult life.
“Should the worst words a fifteen-year-old ever wrote decide the rest of his life?”
Herz emphasized that Bell accepts responsibility for his past remarks and has demonstrated personal growth and accountability since.
Bell’s Public Apology
Bell publicly apologized for the past tweets and expressed remorse for any harm caused.
“I am deeply sorry for the language that I used on Twitter,” Bell stated. He acknowledged the wrongness of his former words, emphasizing that they do not reflect his current self or beliefs.
Trail Blazers’ Official Stand
The Trail Blazers, citing their policies, opted for immediate termination of Bell’s contract. They reiterated zero tolerance for comments contrary to their values, which are in alignment with team and league regulations.
“The Portland Trail Blazers have zero tolerance for racist, sexist, or harmful comments.” They emphasized that the legacy and character of the play-by-play role would be maintained without exception.
Responses and Future Steps
Despite calls for reinstatement, the Trail Blazers reiterated their decision in a statement to The Athletic, offering no further comments. They apologized to fans for the situation and committed to finding a new broadcaster who aligns with their values.
