Franco Baresi: A Legacy in Italian Soccer

Franco Baresi, legendary defender and former AC Milan captain, has passed away at the age of 66. His death was confirmed by AC Milan, the club he represented throughout his 20-year career. No cause of death was provided.

Milan expressed their sorrow, stating, “The entire history of AC Milan is in tears.” Baresi underwent surgery in August 2025 to remove a pulmonary nodule and started immunotherapy. His last public appearance was in February at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

During the event, he carried the torch into the San Siro stadium with Giuseppe Bergomi. AC Milan praised Baresi, noting that “his example and integrity” remain embedded in the club’s legacy, alongside his iconic number 6 jersey.

Italy’s Premier Giorgia Meloni remarked, “With the passing of Franco Baresi, Italy loses one of its greatest sports figures.” Baresi, known for his one-club loyalty, debuted at 17 and became captain at 22, even after Milan’s relegation.

Baresi played over 700 matches for Milan, leading the team through a successful era in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His accomplishments included three Champions League titles, six Serie A trophies, and multiple other honors.

Milan owner Gerry Cardinale said Baresi “always reminded us what it means to wear these colors.” Baresi once reflected on his early days, saying, “Arriving at Milanello at 14 felt like entering paradise.”

He played a crucial role in Italy’s success, including the 1982 World Cup victory and the 1994 final appearance. Baresi’s number 6 jersey was retired by Milan, marking a first in Italian soccer. A celebration match featured stars he played with or against.

Appointed honorary president of Milan in 2020, he was called “an extraordinary champion” by the Italian soccer federation president, Giovanni Malagò. Tributes are planned for the national team’s next match.

Initially trialed at Inter Milan, Baresi found his path at AC Milan. The image of the Baresi brothers, Franco and Giuseppe, became iconic in the Milan derby.

Gianluigi Buffon recalled his debut against Baresi, saying, “Finding myself on the field against champions like him was incredible.” Buffon acknowledged Baresi’s influence in embodying class and respect in football. “Ciao Franco. Rest in peace,” Buffon concluded.
