Freak Accident Involving Cyclist Einer Rubio at Tour de France

The Tour de France concluded on Sunday, but not before an unusual incident during Stage 19. Colombian cyclist Einer Rubio experienced a startling accident while climbing Alpe d’Huez. He was tailing a support vehicle, expecting it to clear the path ahead.

Such a strategy often benefits riders, allowing them to ride in the vehicle’s slipstream. However, this plan backfired for Rubio when the vehicle abruptly braked on the narrow road lined with spectators. The support vehicle had to halt unexpectedly because a spectator fell directly in its path.

“A spectator fell forward directly into the path of the car,” said a spokesperson from UAE Team Emirates-XRG as reported by The Telegraph. “The car braked to avoid the collision. It was a very unfortunate incident and something nobody wants to see. We wish Einer Rubio a speedy recovery.”

Rubio, who ranked 27th overall at the time, sustained significant injuries. He needed 20 stitches and spent an hour in the medical tent. Medical personnel then airlifted him to a hospital for further care.

These kinds of incidents raise questions about the proximity of fans to the race route. Allowing fans such close access has often led to accidents, and it doesn’t benefit the cyclists’ performance.
