Future of LIV Golf Tour in Question as Saudi Funding Uncertainty Emerges

The Saudi Arabia-backed Public Investment Fund (PIF) has announced its intention to withdraw funding for the LIV Golf Tour by the end of the 2026 season. This has led to speculation about the league’s future. Initially, LIV attracted top players like Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, and Jon Rahm with lucrative contracts. However, its momentum has slowed as the tour struggles to become profitable.

Some younger talents, such as men’s college golf national champion Michael La Sasso, chose LIV over the PGA Tour. Despite this, other prominent players have remained with the PGA. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil stated there is interest from investors to continue supporting the league. He announced they have signed a term sheet with an unknown lead backer. Meanwhile, several players, including DeChambeau, have engaged in discussions with potential investors.

Despite O’Neil’s optimism, skepticism persists. Koepka has rejoined the PGA Tour in 2026 under a ‘returning member program.’ Rahm’s departure seems imminent, and the DP World Tour may pressure some players by limiting dual-tour opportunities.

Ian Poulter, an early LIV signer who left the PGA Tour in 2022, suggested in a YouTube appearance on ‘GOLF LIFE’ that LIV’s end could be near. Asked if LIV would endure past 2026, Poulter speculated time might “run out.” He mentioned a critical deadline of September 1, implying the need to secure $300 million within four weeks. Without these funds, he questioned whether PIF would let the business collapse or risk a $6 billion loss.

Poulter expressed uncertainty about the impact on players, including himself. Some might consider the DP World Tour or even the PGA Tour due to their reputations. However, many players have limited choices. Now aged 50, Poulter mentioned potential options like the Champions Tour if LIV undergoes a transformation.

The unexpected PIF withdrawal highlights the risk of joining a startup league, even one with significant financial backing. While marquee players like DeChambeau, Rahm, Tyrell Hatton, and Joaquin Neimann have options, others face challenging decisions. The fate of upcoming talents like La Sasso remains uncertain.
