Gen Z Students Choose Online Learning Over Traditional College Experience
Recently, some Gen Z freshmen have opted to leave their college campuses and pursue education online, just a few weeks into the fall semester. Others have left school entirely. This topic was discussed during a segment on ‘Outnumbered’ on Fox News, where hosts noted students are focusing on obtaining degrees rather than experiencing campus life.
Responses to this trend have varied. One Facebook commenter said, “To be fair, college is not for everyone.” Another pointed out “Time for the school of HARD KNOCKS!” highlighting a preference for practical experiences over formal education.
A TikTok by a 17-year-old showed her journey from Southern University in Louisiana to her home in Las Vegas, only two weeks into her first semester. Many young people today appear to be uncomfortable with facing struggles, with some online users suggesting that learning to manage discomfort is crucial.
Co-host Kaleigh McEnany shared her college struggles, recalling how her mother encouraged her to continue despite her anxiety. The TikTok student clarified she didn’t drop out but switched to online learning.
Various factors, including financial and mental health concerns, prompt these decisions. A parent on Reddit expressed concern about a son’s decision to leave college early, despite his academic success and a full scholarship covering his first year. Another user asked about the son’s reasons and advised understanding his concerns before making conclusions.
Other parents shared their experiences with socially anxious children, noting the challenges these students face in adapting to college. One parent described their daughter’s anxiety about public speaking but acknowledged some initial successes.
Some people defended delaying college, viewing it as a significant maturity checkpoint. They encouraged alternative paths such as working full-time before pursuing a degree. Several online comments emphasized that young adults should not rush into academia without being ready, with advice to explore other income avenues and responsibilities.
The ‘Outnumbered’ segment highlighted that many Gen Z students completed high school remotely during the COVID pandemic. As such, they may find navigating college campuses particularly challenging. A Psychology Today piece discussed how students returning home need structured guidance, such as clear work, household responsibilities, and health routines.
