German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed the media at the Christian Democratic Union party headquarters in Berlin after his party’s losses in two state elections. He announced his intention to remain in office and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing reforms in Germany’s economy, despite challenges.
Exit polls from public broadcaster ARD revealed that the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) secured only 5% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, marking the party’s lowest result in any state since World War II. The Alternative for Germany party gained significant traction, known for its anti-migration stance and friendly relations with Russia.
Merz labeled the CDU’s performance a “disaster” but maintained a resolute stance, dismissing any notion of abandoning the government’s reform agenda. He stressed the urgency of reforms to tackle Germany’s economic and political issues, promising to proceed with determination and patience.
In Berlin, projections indicated that the CDU ranked second with 20%, trailing the Left party at 24.5%, according to exit polls. Merz’s credibility was further compromised after the CDU’s defeat by the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt earlier in September, a result that surprised many Germans who believed the country had overcome nationalist sentiments.
Merz, 70, took office with the aim of revitalizing Germany’s stagnant economy. His popularity has waned, and the recent strong performance of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt signals the possibility of forming a far-right regional government, which has further damaged his reputation.
Internal calls have emerged within the CDU for Merz’s replacement as chancellor, although these discussions have not reached top-level allies, who caution against engaging in “personnel debates.” In a move that reflects the challenging post-election environment, Merz canceled his scheduled trip to New York next week for the U.N. General Assembly. Despite these obstacles, he remains determined to complete his chancellorship.
