Courage is often seen in those who stand by their beliefs, even under pressure. This season, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen took a stand against expected loyalty to LGBTQ ideologies during Pride Nights. Joining him is San Francisco Giants pitcher Landen Roupp, who expressed his faith in God through a silent but visible protest.
During a Pride Night event at Oracle Park, Roupp chose not to wear the rainbow-themed attire that the team promoted. Instead, he wrote Genesis 9:12-16 on his gear. These Bible verses talk about God’s promise, using a rainbow to symbolize the covenant to never again destroy humanity with a flood.
And God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’
Genesis 9:12-16
Roupp’s choice mirrors an action by Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers, who similarly referenced these verses against the celebration of LGBTQ identities.
While some Giants fans expressed disappointment with Roupp’s stance, others, particularly from Christian communities online, praised his courage. Comments on social media reflected support, suggesting there is a need for more athletes with his conviction.
In interviews following the game, Roupp explained his intent to highlight God’s promise and highlighted the absence of hatred in his message. He emphasized his right to his beliefs while acknowledging the significance of the rainbow as a Christian symbol.
Despite mixed reactions, Roupp’s message emphasized that disagreement does not equate to hate. He highlighted the change over time in societal expectations for public figures to align with certain ideologies. According to Roupp, freedom of belief is critical and shouldn’t be compromised by external pressures.
In terms of performance, Roupp’s game against the Chicago Cubs ended in a 5-1 loss, with him allowing 4 earned runs across 4.2 innings. Though the performance was not stellar, his actions off the field sparked significant attention and discussion within sports communities.
